What is an index portfolio?

Indices are hypothetical portfolios of a specific market or market segment, and are often used as a benchmark for the performance of stock markets. An index portfolio is a portfolio that aims to generate the same return as a specific index. Furthermore, a stock index helps to show the value trend for a group of securities over a specific period of time. A common Swedish index is OMXS30, which shows the value trend for the 30 most traded securities in Sweden. The greater the market value a stock has, the greater the significance of the stock's specific value development in the index. Most indices are structured in a similar way to the OMXS30.
